"My view of the role of a scheme secretary is that it can vary greatly according to the needs of the particular scheme.  It may be a relatively functional role but can also be a role offering significant support and guidance to the trustees where needed.

In relation to the scheme on which I have worked with Pi they have always managed the functional side with the utmost efficiency and thoroughness.  Pi prepare and circulate meeting papers in good time ahead of meetings; they include relevant copy documents and backing notes which provide objective summaries of the issues to be discussed.   Follow-up is equally prompt and efficient.  Draft minutes are circulated for comment shortly after each meeting.  I usually struggle to find a comment to make, as they are invariably clear, full and accurate.  Action points that fall to Pi are addressed quickly and efficiently.

For this scheme Pi produces drafts of member communications, which are clear well written.  Pi also carries out the very important role of liaising with other professionals who provide services to the scheme, and does its best to ensure that the advice given is relevant, timely and circulated to relevant parties.

The scheme in question has provided a range of challenges in terms both of the complexity of the legal, regulatory and tactical issues that have arisen and the personalities involved.  I have chaired the scheme since 2005, during which time I have found the support offered by Pi to be of enormous assistance.  It has been strong, calm and constructive, while not straying into the trustees' territory in terms of decision-making.   One or two critical issues have arisen while our main contact has been away.  However, the support has always been seamless.
